Made it to NC

Springer Mountain is the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail but is not the start of most journeys on the AT.

Good afternoon all,

Pull out your maps.  After last night hiking almost 20 miles to get to our camp site we have made it to yet another quality mountain town.  We are in Franklin, NC.
We are gearing up for the Great Smoky Mountains which are quite the talk among us hikers because there’s the equivalent of a hiking traffic jam leading up to them.  According to a number of rumors there’s either 3 feet of snow still on the ground for us to hike through or its just freaking cold.  Many people are waiting outside the Smokies or have gone home to wait for better weather.  NC is over one thousand feet higher than in GA as well as it being further north.  When we enter the Smokies it should be another 1,500 foot gain from where we are currently on the trail.  Even if these rumors aren’t true the Smokies seem intimidating.  To hike past them we have to do just as much hiking as we already have done.  So the scale of the AT has come to light in our minds.  We have a long way to go!
We have both been having aches and pains but we are learning which ones we need to watch and which are just muscles that can work through the pain.  We are still both in good spirits.  Enjoying our time out here in the wonderfully unpredictable weather of the southern Appalachians.  Snow one day, 65 the next.

Until next time,
