Did you know that the average thru-hiker on the Appalachian Trail takes about 5 million steps?
We just made it to Fontana Dam,
and got a permit for hiking through the Smokies. The weather has turned around and is nice and sunny now, and we’re pretty happy about that since we’ve hiked in rain, fog, hail, thunder storms, snow, and sleet since we started just 2 weeks ago.
I’ve been experiencing some knee pain, but it seems to be lessening, especially when we do fewer miles, so I think I’m building stronger muscles around my knees.
We’ve seen a few small signs of spring- a few trilliums popping up and the red maples are beginning to bloom.
We hope to be in Hot Springs, NC in 7 days (for Dirt Stew’s birthday) where we’ll take a day off.
